DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
As you follow the road out of Kahului airport, you will eventually come to a stoplight. At the light, turn left onto Dairy Road and remain in the left lane. Drive straight through several lights, until you see Home Depot on your left. At the next stoplight, turn left onto Pu`unene Avenue. A few minutes after driving on Pu`unene Avenue you will see the Sugar Mill in the distance to your left. Pu’unene Avenue shortly turns into Mokulele Highway but all you have to do is continue to follow the road. The next major landmark to look for is the Humane Society, which will be on your right. About five minutes after this landmark you will come to another intersection, Mokulele Highway and Pi’ilani Highway. Drive straight through the stoplight until the road ends and you are forced to make a turn. Turn left onto South Kihei Road and drive approximately one mile. Turn left onto Wailana Place (look for the wall with a mural of a male and female hula dancer on it). Wailana Sands is the fourth building on the left. Our unit is #206 on the second floor.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MAUI:
Maui is known as the “Valley Isle” due to the fact that two volcanoes spewed lava until they ran together forming the rich lush valley where today sugar cane is grown. If you drive to Kihei from Kahului, you will be driving thru the valley and the sugar cane fields. The older extinct volcano on your right is now referred to as the West Maui Mountains. The larger dormant volcano on your left is called Haleakala. Haleakala’s elevation is over 10,000 feet and warrants a trip to the top for spectacular viewing. Kihei is known as the dry sunny side of Haleakala with yearly rain averages of about 10 inches. Don’t be surprised by the cactus mixed in with the palm trees – it’s a desert oasis on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The beaches are the most spectacular around Kihei, Wailea and Makena. The beach you see from the Maui Vacation Shack is the longest walking beach on Maui and home to many kite and wind surfers. No trip to Maui is complete without a drive down thru Wailea (Maui’s Gold Coast). There is a two-mile long sidewalk that runs along the ocean and beautiful resorts. Another must see is to continue your drive down to Makena. Stop at the roadside Jawz Tacos truck and have the best taco you’ll ever eat or quench your thirst with a shave ice! Just a little farther down the road is the famous Big Beach/Little Beach, the largest undeveloped beach on Maui. If sunbathing in the nude is your fancy, head up and over the rock cliff to Little Beach. There are activities galore for you to do. Maui Thrill Tours is a locally owned and operated activity, travel and tour coordinator. They have an eco-nature, kayak and snorkel operation as well.

Everyone has to eat, so here are a few suggestions in the Kihei area. You can see the first restaurant from your lanai, Isana Restaurant, which has incredible sushi. Head over to Ashley’s Café and try the best burger in town. They also serve a fantastic breakfast and lunch - daily. In the Azeka Shopping Center you will find Jaws Tacos. It is owned and operated by the owners of the Maui Vacation Shack. Also in the Azeka shopping area is Stella Blues, a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Their Patty Melt is Da Bomb and their BBQ ribs are sensational! Go to Eskimo Candy to get fresh fish that you can take home and prepare yourself. Also try their Fish-n-Chips. In the heart of Kihei, across from Foodland Grocery, are several great eateries. Tastings Wine Bar has remarkable food and the wine list is above par. Expect to spend around $100 for two. Next door is a fun place called the Tiki Lounge. Live entertainment and the best brick oven pizza are just a couple of reasons to check this place out. Nearby is another great breakfast and lunch place - Kaiona Café. Feel like cooking? Stop by Hawaiian Moons for your fresh organic local produce. At the Greek Bistro, the Greek Salad with Pita Pizza (get the ziziki dressing) and calamari appetizer are simply sublime. The Five Palms on the beach is the place for cocktails. Moving to the Wailea area…at the Four Seasons head to Spagos and don’t pass up the Sushi Cones, a true taste treat. The Maui Prince Hotel is famous for their seafood buffet. A favorite nightspot for many (ours too) is Mulligan’s on the Blue. Honest Irish fare with the best entertainment on the island. Don’t miss their Wailea Nights (dinner and show) every Thursday and Friday. It will be the highlight of your trip. Lastly go to the Jawz Taco roadside truck just past the Maui Prince Hotel and order the Grilled Mahi Taco with our home brewed Green Ice Tea.

Bon Apetite!
